Sonia Sarabia

For several years, Sonia Sarabia was unable to walk. Her mobility challenges were related to myelopathy, a condition that affects the spinal cord, and became more severe after a fall in 2022. After the fall, Sonia went into a coma and developed increased weakness and severe tightness in her lower legs, making even routine daily activities difficult.

In 2024, Sonia came to Ballard Rehabilitation Hospital’s outpatient center to improve her mobility and strength as she prepared for surgery to address contractures in her feet. As she consistently attended therapy, Sonia began making steady gains.

Her outpatient therapy sessions focused on building strength, improving movement, and preparing for the next step in her care. Sonia’s therapy team supported her as she worked toward greater independence and a goal that had once felt far away: walking again.

After her procedure, Sonia reached a major milestone. For the first time in years, she began walking.

Today, Sonia continues outpatient therapy at Ballard Rehab, where she is working to improve her gait, build confidence, and return to the hobbies and recreational activities she used to enjoy.
