Efren Cortez
When Efren Cortez arrived at Ballard Rehabilitation Hospital, he faced a long road ahead. After surviving a gunshot wound to the neck that left him with fractures in his vertebrae, he required the help of two people just to move in bed or transfer to a wheelchair. He couldn’t walk, propel his wheelchair, or complete daily activities on his own.
Despite these challenges, Efren brought positivity and determination to every therapy session. Known for his sense of humor and upbeat attitude, he quickly built friendships with other patients and kept his care team smiling.
Efren participated in intensive physical and occupational therapy focused on rebuilding his strength, mobility, and independence. His recovery journey wasn’t easy—severe nerve pain and hypersensitivity made therapy challenging at times—but Efren refused to give up. Working closely with his care team, including Dr. Yung, who helped manage his symptoms through medication and specialized therapy approaches, Efren began making steady progress.
By discharge, he was able to walk short distances independently and use a front-wheeled walker for longer distances. He could even climb stairs and complete most of his daily activities with little to no assistance!
Recognizing that long distances and uneven terrain still posed challenges, the team collaborated with Jairo, an Assistive Technology Professional from Assurance Medical Supply, to design a custom wheelchair that would allow Efren to remain independent in any environment.
Today, Efren is back home, continuing his recovery and embracing life with the same humor and resilience that carried him through rehabilitation.
Efren, your hard work and positivity have been truly inspiring. It has been an honor to be part of your journey, and we wish you continued strength and success as you move forward.
