Amputation Rehabilitation Program

The loss of a limb is life-altering and recovery is an ongoing journey. The Ballard Rehabilitation Hospital team is here to provide direction and support along the way.

Individuals who have experienced the loss of a limb can benefit from a specialized rehabilitation program to address the unique challenges they face afterward. Ballard Rehabilitation Hospital’s comprehensive approach to amputee rehabilitation addresses the physical, emotional, social, and day-to-day challenges of life post-amputation.

Ballard Rehabilitation Hospital’s post-amputation rehabilitation program focuses on:

Promoting recovery in a safe healing environment.

We provide 24-hour nursing care and daily physician management. Board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, also known as physiatrists, lead our hospital’s care team. Our team of skilled professionals provides close supervision and treatment of medical issues, allowing patients to focus on their recovery goals and safely participate in their therapy programs.

To promote proper wound healing, our specialists can treat post-operative wounds and monitor for any developing concerns. We also assist with managing new medications and can address any pain management needs that may arise, including phantom limb pain.

Maximizing each individual’s strength and independence.

Rehabilitation is our specialty. Our team of rehab experts will develop a program specific to each individual’s goals and needs. Our patients receive physical therapy services to improve mobility, strength, endurance, and confidence. At the same time, occupational therapists work with patients on self-care activities and the use of assistive devices. We also provide prosthetic services, training, and support.

Ballard Rehabilitation Hospital offers a spacious therapy gym, state-of-the-art equipment, and functional living areas. Functional living areas are spaces specially designed to simulate a home environment. Here patients can safely practice newly learned therapy techniques before returning home.

Providing direction and support for both patients and their family members.

The loss of a limb creates many challenges. We’re here to help our patients and their families through the physical, emotional, and social changes they may experience. Our team members can provide family education and help make connections to community resources such as amputee support groups. Our social work and case management employees work hard to make sure each patient and their family members have the support they need.

Our services are provided by a team of skilled, compassionate medical professionals. Learn more about our interdisciplinary team approach.
